The cost of nursing home care is steadily increasing, with private rooms averaging about $80,000 a year, according to a recent marketing survey by MetLife. The new rates represent an increase of about 3.3% over last year’s average nursing home cost.
The most expensive facilities were nursing homes in Alaska, where private rooms average about $584 per day. The cheapest were Louisiana nursing homes, with daily private room costs coming in at about $132. However, you may get what you pay for. A recent U.S. Newsweek report listed Alaska as the state with the best quality nursing home care, based on health inspections and safety reports. Nursing homes in Louisiana ranked among the worst.
MetLife officials cautioned consumers to shop around for both quality and reasonable prices.
Other elderly care costs rose as well, with assisted living costs increasing 3.3% and the cost of home health care skyrocketing 5%.
