Two former employees of the John J. Kane Regional Center in the Glen Hazel area of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania have pleaded guilty to nursing home assault and harassment of a 94-year-old Alzheimer’s patient.
Shelly Keene, 35, and Karen Perry, 46, both certified nursing assistants at the Pittsburgh nursing home, were sentenced to probation and had to sign agreements that they would never work with the elderly again. The sentences were handed down on October 5 by Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Kathleen A. Durkin. Perry pleaded guilty to harassment, for allegedly yelling at the patient, telling her she’d slept with the resident’s husband, throwing an orange at her and hitting her in the forehead. Keene pleaded guilty to simple assault for allegedly striking the elderly woman in the forehead.
Charges were dropped against a third employee, Shalaya Hatten, 31. Hatten has filed a suit against the county for accusing her of being involved in the Pittsburgh nursing home abuse, saying that she was on vacation at the time the assaults occurred.
