A potentially deadly stomach bug is on the rise among the elderly, possibly due to the overuse of antibiotics, according to a new study.
Clostridium difficile infections are increasingly common among elderly people, according to researchers at the Mayo Clinic. The bug, once mostly encountered as a form of hospital or nursing home infection, can cause colon inflammation and bouts of diarrhea which can be fatal to elderly victims, and the germ is difficult to treat because it has become more resistant to many forms of antibiotics.
