Nursing Home Statistics for 16,000 Facilities Released

A statistical analysis of federal nursing home ratings by Scripps-Howard adds to findings of previous studies which show that nonprofit nursing homes take better care of residents, and are better at preventing cases of nursing home neglect.
The analysis of ratings for 16,000 nursing homes found that larger facilities fared poorly compared to smaller ones, and it also found that care was better in nursing homes where there was a high nurse-to-patient ratio. In general, nursing homes in southern states rated lower than those in the northeast.
The government rating system of one to five stars, with five star facilities considered the best, was implemented last year by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
