Two Maryland Nursing Homes Evacuated Due to Air Conditioning Problems

State officials in Maryland had to evacuate two Baltimore city nursing homes this month due to problems with air conditioning which the state said could have caused nursing home neglect problems and endangered elderly residents, who are more susceptible to health problems from high heat.

One of the facilities, Ravenwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, failed to inform the state that its air conditioning failed in a timely manner. State investigators only learned about the problem after a resident called 911 to report that nursing home officials had left them to bake in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees. The state removed 150 residents from the facility, which will remain shut down until the air conditioning system can be repaired.

Another nursing home, Liberty Heights Health and Rehabilitation Center, had to have 74 residents removed because it did not even have a central air system installed and instead relied on a number of individual units. The temperature inside the facility was 94 degrees with the state evacuated it.
